Hurricane Damage Hurricanes and tropical storms can cause a lot of damage.

You will get some warning with a tropical storm or hurricane.

As the Storm Approaches

In Sarasota, Longboat Key, Siesta Key, Lakewood Ranch and other areas of Sarasota and Manatee counties, listen for weather updates on local stations and on NOAA Weather Radio. Stay tuned to the latest information.

REMEMBER: Hurricanes can be unpredictable. There is always potential error in the forecast track from the National Hurricane Center. Don’t focus on the exact forecasted track, listen to local officials. (For more information go to www.noaa.gov or www.weather.gov, click on Tampa Bay area.)

Check your Disaster Supplies. Get any needed items.

Clean and fill bathtubs and sinks before a storm so you’ll have extra clean water.

Turn refrigerator and freezer dials to the coldest settings and avoid opening the doors to help keep perishable food in case of a power outage.

Refill prescriptions. Maintain at least a two-week supply of medication during hurricane season.

Clear your yard of lawn furniture, potted plants, bicycles, trash cans and other potential airborne missiles. Leave the swimming pool filled and super-chlorinated. Cover the filtration system.

Protect your windows and glass doors with plywood or storm shutters. Brace double entry and garage doors at the top and bottom.

If there is a chance flooding could threaten your home, move important items such as electronics, antiques and furniture off the floor.

Fill your car’s gas tank and check oil, water and tires. Gas pumps won’t operate without electricity.

Secure your boat early. Drawbridges will be closed to boat traffic after an evacuation order is issued.

Get cash. Banks and ATMs won’t work without electricity and few stores will be able to accept credit cards or personal checks.

Never sweep or blow yard leaves, pine needles, grass clippings or soil into the street or storm water system. This clogs up the storm water pipes and prevents water from draining.

Storms Come In Many Different Types

2/2/2022 (Permalink)

Storms Always be aware of any approaching storm in your area.

Living in Sarasota, you may ask yourself, “What kind of storms are there? And what kind are common in my area?”

Well, there are many different types of storms, such as:

Derecho Storms

Tropical Storms

Hurricanes

Flooding

Hail Storms

Snow Storms

Hurricanes

Ice Storms

Lightning

Thunderstorms

The most common types of storms in the Sarasota area are:

Derecho Storms

Tropical Storms

Hurricanes

Flooding

Hail Storms

Lightning

Thunderstorms

A thunderstorm is a storm with lightning and thunder. It’s produced by a cumulonimbus cloud, usually producing gusty winds, heavy rain and sometimes hail. The basic ingredients used to make a thunderstorm are moisture, unstable air and lift. You need unstable air that is relatively warm and can rise rapidly.

Damage comes not only from high winds, but also from the so-called marine over wash, a combination of effects resulting from tropical storm conditions that include storm surge, wind setup, wave setup, and wave swash. The primary effect is the storm surge resulting from extremely low atmospheric pressure.

What do you get when you add poorly sealed windows, no gutters, a cracked wall, and not being able to check on your property? The perfect recipe for disaster in your business. This picture shows what can happen when you're away from your office building during storm season. This company had major flooding in their storage space and was not discovered until after the weekend. The water had not moved much and there was loss of some products but mostly a huge headache for the owners!

SERVPRO of North Sarasota was there to remove the water, fan with our air movers, and dehumidify the air. We also removed all the damaged goods and set aside for the owners to go through while monitoring temperature and humidity levels. Luckily SERVPRO got there quick when the problem was discovered or their building could have been compromised more by standing water. We won't always have perfect buildings because of time and shifting environments, but that's when you know you can count on SERVPRO!

For beaches its the most popular time of year. This is the time of year to beat the heat. Everyone is going to have fun in the sand, spend some family time, or maybe going to catch a few waves. However, one thing people forget to take into consideration is the waves.

Most people when they look at the waves don't really look at it as a danger, but they are the reason for some of the worst natural disasters in the world. Strong rip currents can cause Tsunami's, Hurricanes, cyclones, and very strong tides. Statistics from 2018 show that 65% of deaths come from strong rip currents. Here are some ways to be safe when you are in the water

  • Always make sure to remain between two active life guard station at all times.
  • If you start having trouble with the current conditions of the waves stay out of the water until they settle.
  • Always have someone watching you on shore to make sure you are okay.
  • If you see the yellow flags do not go into the water unless you are a strong swimmer.
  • If you start drifting stay calm, and call for help by waving your arms in a relaxed manner.
  • If you are at shore and the flag is red, it would be safe to not be at the beach as this could mean a storm is approaching.

Hurricane Preparedness

6/4/2019 (Permalink)

Summer is that time of year were the heat and humidity start to rise and become a really uncomfortable factor during our day to day activities. Unfortunately, they also create one of the worst natural disasters in the world. When there is water, heat and humidity there are hurricanes.

Hurricanes are never a pretty sight to see, and are very scary if your not prepared. Always have an emergency plan ready for before, during and after a hurricane. The only good thing about hurricanes is they can be predicted unlike earthquakes, you can always prepare for them. Here are some steps you can take to make sure you are safe during the three phases of a hurricane.

Before:

  • Listen for any alarm, or alert from law enforcement. If they are asking you to evacuate then follow their orders.
  • Watch any weather broadcast to see the status of the storm.
  • Make sure you have food, water, and a source of power ready to go in a kit.
  • If you are planning to head out of state for safety make sure to leave early, and have a spare gas tank just in case.
  • Obtain an ERP from SERVPRO. This will come in handy after the storm.

During:

  • If you are in the middle of a storm find shelter immediately. Do not remain outside.
  • If you were not able to evacuate, board up your windows to avoid any shattered glass.
  • Know that these storms will last a while. Try to locate your nearest law enforcement facility for help.

After:

  • If you were asked to evacuate, do not return to your home unless told so by local law enforcement.
  • Be very cautious of were you step, and location. There will be a lot of debris, so you can still hurt yourself.
  • When you are allowed to go home check for any damages mainly check for water damages.
  • If you have any water damages take a look at that ERP. This will allow you to have SERVPRO Disaster Recovery team out there immediately to take care of any damages. Plus the ERP will help you organize who to call, so you can get back up an running in no time.

Hurricanes are never fun, and can become a very stressful situation. However, if you have a solid emergency plan and the right disaster team behind you everything will be okay. Let us at SERVPRO OF NORTH SARASOTA be your choice for a disaster team when you need help. With our disaster recovery and large loss teams nearby we will be able help you recover in a timely manner. AVOIDING CONTRACTOR SCAMS

Every year, many homes and commercial buildings are damaged by severe storms. Property owners become the victims of unlicensed, uninsured, inexperienced contractors and outright scammers who come to prey on uninformed people.

Poor quality contractors and scammers can cause permanent damage, devalue your property, steal your money and put you at personal, legal and financial risk… not to mention all the headaches!

Many scams begin with a knock at your door, or an unsolicited call on the phone, claiming to be a contractor. Unfortunately, many scam companies imitate legitimate contractors, so protect yourself by checking your contractor out, before agreeing to an inspection.

Make sure any contractor you work with is properly licensed, insured, and provides 3 local references

It’s that time of the year. Summer comes with rain. Rain comes with thunder storms and lightning. Lightning is a leading cause of injury and death from weather-related hazards. • Move from outdoors into a building or car.

HOW TO STAY SAFE WHEN A THUNDERSTORM THREATENS

WHAT TO DO NOW: Prepare

  • Know your area’s risk for thunderstorms. In most places, they can occur year-round and at any hour.

SERVPRO of North Sarasota Helping Create a Family Hurricane Readiness Plan

6/1/2018 (Permalink)

Be Prepared

A hurricane on the way can be frightening for everyone, especially children and teenagers. Going over your emergency plan now can help ease some of their fears, and give everyone the confidence that he/she will know what to do in the event of a storm.

  • Have a family meeting about the weather conditions. Explain why you’ll need to stay safe at home or evacuate as the storm nears.
  • Locate and agree on a safe room (or safe areas) in your home. Move pillows, flashlights, batteries, food and other hurricane supplies to that area.
  • Gather necessary medicines, glasses/contact lenses, a first aid kit, and items for children such as baby formula and diapers. Keep them handy.
  • Come up with an escape route from your house.
  • Decide on a rendezvous point where everyone can meet in case you’re separated during the storm.
  • Write out contact information for family members. Include work and school, meeting locations and emergency services.
  • Decide on a family contact who lives out of town or out of state, so all family members have a single point of contact in case of emergency. Make sure everyone knows this person and his/her phone number.
  • The Department’s Emergency Contact Information (ECI) program allows Floridians to securely register contact information online at https://services.flhsmv.gov/eci/ and in driver license offices. DHSMV Executive Director Terry Rhodes says the information can only be accessed by law enforcement in times of emergency. There is no fee to register.

  • Post emergency phone numbers near your phone and explain when and how to call 911.
  • Decide what to do with your pets if you need to evacuate. Make a plan for your pets - don’t leave them behind.
  • If there’s a chance you’ll evacuate, pack in advance, and allow children to pack one special item for comfort, such as a stuffed animal.

2018 Hurricane Season

According to experts we will have a slightly above hurricane season in the number of storms that develop (14 vs 12) but an average number of hurricanes which is 7, and 3 major storms with winds in excess of 110 mph. This year models are trending more for an El Nino to form.  This will limit the number of major storms due to the increased shear this phenomenon creates over the Atlantic basin.

Hurricane Harvey

Hurricane Harvey near peak intensity prior to landfall in southern Texas on August 25

Hurricane Harvey was the first major hurricane to make landfall in the United States since Wilma in 2005, ending a record 12-year period with no hurricanes of Category 3 intensity or higher making landfall in the United States. In a four-day period, many areas received more than 40 inches (1,000 mm) of rain as the system meandered over eastern Texas and adjacent waters, causing catastrophic flooding. Harvey is the wettest tropical cyclone on record in the contiguous United States. The resulting floods inundated hundreds of thousands of homes, displaced more than 30,000 people, and prompted more than 13,000 rescues.

Bracing For A Hurricane

6/26/2017 (Permalink)

You will get some warning with a tropical storm or hurricane.

As the Storm Approaches

Listen for weather updates on local stations and on NOAA Weather Radio.

This clogs up the stormwater pipes and prevents water from draining.

If you own a business, follow your Business Continuity Plan. For more information on how to create a Business Continuity Plan, go online to www.ready. gov
